A group of professional footballers in a European country reportedly plan on coming out as gay next month as part of a campaign.

According to a German weekly newspaper called Preußische Allgemeine Zeitung, a group of male players in Germany are planning to come out on 17 May, a week before the end of the current Bundesliga campaign.

The date is significant as 17 May is an International Day Against Homophobia, with all clubs involved believed to have been informed about the campaign.

It is, however, noted that several of those players could still decide against coming out as they are hesitant about making their sexuality public.

Ex-professional player Marcus Urban, who played in Germany, is the co-founder of global diversity group Diversero, and has discussed the players' plans.

"May 17th is an offer. A date that you could use as a guide and get together as a group," he said.

"There is controversy there. Do I still want to wait until the world of football becomes the way I want it to be? Why should I wait? An interesting dynamic has come into play, you can see that people's minds are starting to move and are thinking about whether it really makes sense to continue to hide and deny themselves.

"There are also gay Bundesliga couples who are in hiding. That would be so liberating. What's wrong with it?"

As things stand, there are only four active male players who are openly gay, with none of them being in Germany. Blackpool striker Jake Daniels, in 2022, became the first male player in England to come out in 32 years.
