Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag started losing the dressing room when he axed club legend Cristiano Ronaldo last year, according to a former Netherlands star.

Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain following the team's disappointing Premier League campaign, with the team set to finish outside of the top four.

The Dutchman and Ronaldo had a falling out last year, which ended with the club releasing the player after he did an interview with Piers Morgan criticising the club and the manager.

Former Inter Milan and Real Madrid star Wesley Sneijder believes the Ronaldo situation was the start of the trouble for Ten Hag.

"Should I tell you where it went wrong for Erik ten Hag?' He told Veronica Offside, as per Voetbal Primeur.

"On the day that he decided to battle Cristiano Ronaldo. That's where he started losing all the respect.

"He thought it would work out well for him, but it's the opposite.

"Everyone in the dressing room wondered if he is alright in the head by doing that."
