JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 02: Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson maintains that despite their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday evening, his side contains the same quality of players as the Brazilians.

Sundowns flexed their muscle at the FNB as they were at their rampant best to storm to a seventh consecutive league title, this time with six matches left to spare.

Tashreeq Matthews, Mathias Esquivel, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Thembinkosi Lorch were the tormentors in chief, while Mduduzi Shabalala's penalty proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Statistically and otherwise, the Brazilians dominated their counterparts, who are set to enter a 10th season without silverware, with another potential rebuild on the cards.

Speaking to members of the media after the match, Johnson was asked whether he thinks his side have the same quality of players as Sundowns, to which he gave a resounding 'yes' - before stating that results like this happen all over the world.

"Material wise, I think we matched them like you can see," he said.

"Yes, every team in the world gets a hiding sometimes. It just happens that today is the reality that we get beaten 5-1 and every team, like I say, reality wise, it will happen to you. When it happens to another coach. I also feel sorry for him sitting here in the same chair I'm sitting, but pound for pound, we all think our players are capable of matching another player, especially at this level of professional football, especially at a club like Kaizer Chiefs.

"Pound for pound, you should match Orlando Pirates. Pound for pound we should match Mamelodi Sundowns, but we did not today and yeah. We have to accept that and move on," he said.
