Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has shared his insights on the rise of Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, reflecting on their time together at Platinum Stars.

Johnson, who was head coach while Mokwena was beginning his coaching journey, is not surprised by the young coach's success, attributing it to his inquisitive nature and passion for learning.

Before the match against the Brazilians, Johnson spoke to the media about Mokwena's development and achievements.

"He is curious. Very very curious. He is inquisitive all the time. He wants to learn all the time. I remember when we were at Platinum Stars we went to Germany and played against a Barcelona team which had players like Thiago (Alcantara) and they thrashed us but he learnt a lot from that with average Platinum Stars youngsters. That's when I saw that he will have a great future. He likes to teach himself about things and that has helped him a lot," Johnson said.

Johnson also highlighted the influence of Mokwena's family background on his knowledge of the game.

"You also know he is from a football bloodline. He is from the family of Jomo Sono and although he didn't play football at the highest level, that bloodline is a football bloodline and he knows what he has in him.

"But above all he is coaching a very good team. The team that is playing in nice competitions and that is helping him grow as a coach. It's really good for him so far," Johnson concluded.

Mokwena's journey from an inquisitive young coach at Platinum Stars to leading Mamelodi Sundowns in prestigious competitions is testament to his dedication to learning and his deep-rooted connection to football.

Johnson's reflections offer a glimpse into Mokwena's early promise and the factors contributing to his rise in the coaching ranks. As Mokwena continues to make his mark, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring coaches in South Africa, demonstrating the importance of curiosity and self-education.
